22/06/2017: CITY MAYOR AND COUNCILMEMBERS OF MILPITAS COMMEMORATE 119TH ANNIVERSARY OF PHILIPPINE INDEPENDENCE, 20 JUNE 2017

The Philippine Consulate General in San Francisco was invited by Milpitas Mayor Rich Tran to receive a Proclamation declaring June 20, 2017 as "Philippine Independence Remembrance Day" during the City Council Meeting at the City Hall of Milpitas on Tuesday, 20 June 2017.

Assembly Member Ro Khanna from the 17th District of California also presented the Consulate a citation in recognition of its support of the Filipino American Community in the district.

Consul General Henry S. Bensurto, Jr., Madame Mariza S. Bensurto, Deputy Consul General Jaime Ramon T. Ascalon and Mrs. Cecile G. Ascalon received the proclamation and citation during the Meeting from Filipino-American Councilmember Garry Barbadillo.

In his remarks, Consul General Bensurto said that 119 years ago, the Philippines declared its independence and formed its own identity, which every Filipino now carries, whether in the Philippines or abroad. He thanked Mayor Tran for watching over the Filipino Community and celebrating the diversity that the latter brings to the City of Milpitas.

Members of the Filipino-American Community warmly welcomed the Consul General to Milpitas, who received invitations to attend other Community events in the South Bay.

The City of Milpitas honored outstanding Filipino-American Milpitans during the Meeting, including Planning Commissioner Evelyn Chua.

There are about 10,000 Filipinos who call Milpitas their home, which is roughly 15% of the total population of the City.  The Consulate, in partnership with Seafood City, visits Milpitas eight times a year to conduct consular outreaches. END
